You have heard this phrase before, you might have even said it yourself with that video or site you just found online that gave you a headache. It goes something like this, "Computer concepts are hard to grasp, which is why they're not taught in school." This statement is an oversimplification of what computer science really is about, but it doesn't tell the whole story either.  It's true that learning the basics is tough when compared to other subject areas in school because computer science has its own unique vocabulary and concepts. We can and should teach computer concepts and programming in school, but it's not the only way to learn computer science.  As a matter of fact, I think learning computer concepts and programming is much more fun than simply plugging numbers into a formula.  What is Computer Science? Computer science is the study of computers and machine programs that solve problems.  Computer programs are nothing more than algorithms that tell computers how to perform integer calculations, read data from files and display information on the screen, play games, type text etc. We generally call these programs "software" or "apps. "  They are the programs that run on your computer.  Computer science is also the study of how these programs work and what it takes to make good software.  That may sound like an oxymoron but it's not. After all, not all software is good software.In this book I'll be teaching how to design, build and write computer programs that solve real world problems.  The first step to doing this is to understand the computer itself.  I'll introduce you to the concept of binary, or base 2 counting.  To do this, let's turn to an example that's familiar to most people - counting in base 10.Counting in Base 10This is how most people are taught to count by hand starting at zero. 1 10 11 12 13 14 15 16 17 18 19 20 This is known as Base 10 or Decimal counting because each place value represents a power of 10(10=1x100=100x10=1000). So you can see that the place value for 1000 is 1000 1 which means 1000 hundreds, or one thousand. The place value for 100 is 10 2 which means hundred tens or one hundred. The place value for 10 is 10 3 which means ten ones or ten.You'll notice that this is the way we do things with money.  For example, $1.00 is written as 1x100¢, or $0.10 as 1/10¢=10¢, $0.01 as 1/100¢=1p=1d=1cp=1c etc.  So it's not surprising that this is the same way we count money, it's just more convenient for our fingers to move around in an orderly way so we can write numbers down quickly and easily.
